Online resources

Here are some resources that you can access.

Prodigy - is a online game that requires students to solve math problems in order to continue on a journey.

Epic books -  Here you can access many books, including audio and read-to-me books. Our class code is mgy8117. This class code will only be available during school hours.

Pobble365 - is a website that has picture prompts for writing.

These resources are something that we have used in the classroom before and should be a familiar resource for students.

In class learning

Just a quick update about what we have been learning in class...

In Math, we are focusing on fractions. We are learning to represent fractions within a region, set and on a number line.

In Writing, we are working on descriptive writing. We started with some visual prompts for writing what we see. We are using adjectives and adverbs to help paint pictures with our words.

In Social studies, we had a classroom debate on whether or not you should keep a fossil if you found it in Dinosaur Provincial Park. There was some interesting points made along the way and some students changed their mind given the points made by other groups.

Vehicle building

Everyone has been working hard building their vehicles in class. There has been lots of trial and error in this process. Students have been sharing their knowledge with each other. Here are just a few of builds in process.

Reading Project

We are going to start doing a monthly reading project. For our first project each student has selected their own choice book to read. While reading they are to fill out a reading response journal. When finished they are to choose a reading project. We went over some ideas in class which is listed below. The projects are not limited to this list. They can create their own way to show understanding of their book. First book projects are due on Feb 28.

Front Page News! – Create a newspaper page based on events that occurred in your book. Choose 2-3 “stories” from your book to include. Be sure you have headlines for your newspaper stories. For presentation, make your page look as much like a newspaper as possible. Arrange your stories on the page in a newspaper layout, use pictures and captions, and come up with a name for your newspaper that represents your book.

Character Blog – Write 3-5 blog entries from a character in your book. Each entry should be about 150 words long. Describe the events in the story. Consider the following topics for blog entries: introduction of the conflict, rising action, climax, reflecting on the internal conflict, falling action, resolution, and reflection on the theme.

Book Report – Write a 3 paragraph (minimum) book report about your book. Focusing charaters, setting and events in the story.

Comic Book – Retell 3-5 major events from your book by drawing the action into comic book cells. Be sure to include speech or captions in your comic cells. Each major event will need at least 5 comic book cells.

Book Jacket – Create a book jacket for the book you read. On the front, include an illustration that represents your story. Inside the book jacket, explain why you chose that illustration. Your illustration should represent the setting, characters, and conflicts of your book. On the back cover, write a “teaser” paragraph to introduce your book. Be sure that all your work on the book jacket is original, not “inspired” by the book in your hand.

Poster – Create a poster that demonstrates the important elements of your book. Use at least 10 images, and include a caption for each image that explains its relationship to the book.

Media Summary – Use the presentation software of your choice (PowerPoint, google slides) to retell the main points of your book.

Diorama – Construct a diorama (three-dimensional scene which includes models of people, buildings, plants, and animals) of one of the main events of the book. Fins and create miniature replicas of the objects and place them in the scene. Be prepared to tell us about your scene.

Here are some videos to get inspiration for your vehicles.
You are to

Balloon Powered Cars

Elastic Powered Cars

Spring Powered Cars

Vehicles that move

We are starting our next big science unit, building a vehicle that moves. Today we watched some videos to see some examples of vehicles. After some discussions, each student sketched out a plan of the vehicle they intend to build. We will be doing most of the building in class. I am looking for some building materials to have available in class.

Possible building materials:
Plastic bottle caps - any size
Plastic bottles - any size
Cardboard
Any jar lids or wheel like items
Old cd's

Thank you!

Jan 20-24

We have been super busy since returning from break.

In Writing, we are building our writing stamina with picture prompts. Students are presented with a picture and they are to write sentences either describing the pictures, questioning what is happening in the picture or writing a story inspired by the picture. We are focusing on using more descriptive words and adding adjectives and adverbs to paint a picture in the readers mind.

In reading, we are looking at different types of texts. Using the app Epic! books, each students is assigned a book to read. We are focusing on reading with a purpose. We are reading different types of fiction and non-fiction books.

In Math, we have started looking at multiplication, division and fractions. We are working on describing and applying mental mathematics strategies to determine basic multiplication facts to 9 × 9 and related division facts. We made our own arrays for 6x1 to 9x9 to use in a math game.

In Science we are continuing our Wheels and Levers unit looking at simple machines. Students have been constructing devices that use wheel and axel, pulleys, levers and gears. They are very proud of their machines. We looked at the practical applications of each simple machine. We explored levers and the different classes of levers.
