Reading Project

We are going to start doing a monthly reading project. For our first project each student has selected their own choice book to read. While reading they are to fill out a reading response journal. When finished they are to choose a reading project. We went over some ideas in class which is listed below. The projects are not limited to this list. They can create their own way to show understanding of their book. First book projects are due on Feb 28.

Front Page News! – Create a newspaper page based on events that occurred in your book. Choose 2-3 “stories” from your book to include. Be sure you have headlines for your newspaper stories. For presentation, make your page look as much like a newspaper as possible. Arrange your stories on the page in a newspaper layout, use pictures and captions, and come up with a name for your newspaper that represents your book.

Character Blog – Write 3-5 blog entries from a character in your book. Each entry should be about 150 words long. Describe the events in the story. Consider the following topics for blog entries: introduction of the conflict, rising action, climax, reflecting on the internal conflict, falling action, resolution, and reflection on the theme.

Book Report – Write a 3 paragraph (minimum) book report about your book. Focusing charaters, setting and events in the story.

Comic Book – Retell 3-5 major events from your book by drawing the action into comic book cells. Be sure to include speech or captions in your comic cells. Each major event will need at least 5 comic book cells.

Book Jacket – Create a book jacket for the book you read. On the front, include an illustration that represents your story. Inside the book jacket, explain why you chose that illustration. Your illustration should represent the setting, characters, and conflicts of your book. On the back cover, write a “teaser” paragraph to introduce your book. Be sure that all your work on the book jacket is original, not “inspired” by the book in your hand.

Poster – Create a poster that demonstrates the important elements of your book. Use at least 10 images, and include a caption for each image that explains its relationship to the book.

Media Summary – Use the presentation software of your choice (PowerPoint, google slides) to retell the main points of your book.

Diorama – Construct a diorama (three-dimensional scene which includes models of people, buildings, plants, and animals) of one of the main events of the book. Fins and create miniature replicas of the objects and place them in the scene. Be prepared to tell us about your scene.
