Practice choreography

Here is the song to go with the choreography everyone is learning in gym.

Oct 25

This week we started exploring some of our shape and space outcomes for grade 4. We started by looking at understanding the concept of congruency and symmetry. Then we learned about area and perimeter of regular and irregular 2-D shapes.

For writing, we examined how to use a graphic organizer to help organize our writing. We did two "How to" writing pieces to help show the importance of sequential order in writing. We also looked at word choice when writing as we made a haiku poem about Fall.

To go along with our Fall haiku, we explored some watercolour techniques. We made a Fall leaf piece using a dry brush, wet brush and salt application. To outline the leaves we used permanent markers and wax crayons.

In science we did some research looking at the life cycle of some common materials. Each student was responsible for creating a flow chart that demonstrates the cycle of the product they choose.

Classroom Update

Here is a quick look at what we have been learning about in the classroom...

In Math, we have been learning to represent, compare, and order numbers to 10 000, pictorially and symbolically. We have been using base 10 blocks to construct and show to concept of regrouping in addition. We took a close look at Pascal's triangle and looked for patterns. We have been learning to identify, describe and extend patterns using tables and charts.

In ELA, we have been focusing on visualization in reading and writing. When reading we are trying to picture the story like it is a movie in our head. For writing, we are learning to use more descriptive word to help paint a picture for the reader.

In Science, we have been learning about Waste and Our World. We have been exploring humans impact on the environment through waste. We have identified different types of waste and how we can recycle different types of packaging.

In Social Studies, we have been learning about the different regions of Alberta. We looked at what each region looks like and what resources are available in each part of the province. We were lucky to have some artifacts for Ft. Calgary in class last week. These artifacts were from different Aboriginal peoples. We looked at the artifacts and learned about each piece looking at what the item was made of and what purpose the item was used for.

What a great week!

This week sure did fly by. We had an amazing time at The Glenbow museum. We spent the morning creating poems from a chosen painting. Then we became artists as we assembled a mixed media piece by doing a rotation of sensory tables. We used our sense of sight, touch, smell and hearing to explore art expression. In the afternoon, we learned about the Blackfoot language and culture. Our guide shared lots of information about First Nation beliefs and values.
