Week 4

We had a busy week with the Terry Fox Run, picture day and our first class guest presentation.

In Math, we continued to explore increasing patterns through uses of manipulatives and mental math.
In Writing, we worked on our fiction stories and did some response writing.
In Science, we took a closer look at natural waste. We discussed decomposers and started an experiment to see if organic matter would decompose faster in soil or out of soil... we will find out next week.
In Social Studies, we learned about the six regions of Alberta as we looked to see whether these regions would be suitable for a new town.

Orange Shirt Day

Monday, September 30th is Orange Shirt Day.
This is a day where we talk about our First Nations People and the Truth and Reconciliation work that is being done in our country.  We started this conversation this week and read the book Shi-shi-etko by Nicola. We will be sharing more stories in class and talking about concepts around Truth and Reconciliation.
If your child does not have an orange shirt, they are invited to wear one of their favorite shirts as the reality behind orange shirt day is that a favorite shirt of a First Nations child was taken away from her when she entered the residential school system.

Toonies for Terry

Auburn Bay School will be participating in the Terry Fox Run on Wednesday, September 25th. As we lead up to our run, classes will be working towards increasing their stamina in Phys. Ed while fundraising money for cancer research. Please bring in Toonies for Terry to your classroom teacher as we spread cancer awareness.

On the day of the run, it is important that students wear appropriate outside shoes for walking/running along with dressing appropriately for the weather that day. Parents are welcome to join us for this event out on the soccer field at 1:45 PM on Wednesday, September 25th. The Terry Fox Run will last approximately 15 minutes and students will line up with their homeroom teacher to go back inside for the remainder of the afternoon when we have finished. We kindly ask parents to wait outside while this is happening and to pick up your child from their normal dismissal spot.

Week 2

We have had a great first two weeks of school. Our focus has been creating our classroom community, lots of activities around learning about each other and developing classroom expectations. We have been talking about perseverance and acknowledging that it is ok to make mistakes and to fail, this is just a part of our learning journey.

In Math, we reviewed our prior knowledge of place value and patterns. We looked outside to see what patterns we could find around us every day. We were able to identify repeating patterns and increasing patterns.

Math Homework

Today everyone received their math homework for the week. This consisted of six questions to be done for each day of the week, Monday-Thursday. The questions are review of previous skills. Today we did the "Monday" questions together in class. One of my main goals for homework is to help develop their responsibility to make time to do homework and to remember to bring it back on Friday.
